What was McDonald’s first advertising mascot, introduced in 1948?

The story behind the answer

Speedee was McDonald’s first advertising mascot, introduced in 1948.

Speedee appeared as a smiling chef wearing a white uniform and a hamburger-shaped head. His name connected directly with the McDonald brothers’ “Speedee Service System,” the production method introduced when their San Bernardino restaurant was reorganized around fast, standardized service.

The mascot was used in early McDonald’s signs and promotional material before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known character. Speedee’s role was primarily to communicate quick service, rather than to represent a fictional world or a broad cast of characters.

People sometimes confuse Speedee with later McDonald’s personalities. Ronald McDonald became the principal advertising figure in the 1960s, while characters such as Grimace and the Hamburglar appeared later. Speedee therefore belongs to the company’s earliest branding era, before the Golden Arches became dominant.
