What was J.K. Rowling’s first published work after the seven Harry Potter novels?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s first published work after the seven Harry Potter novels was The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard was published in 2007, the same year as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final main Harry Potter novel. It is presented as a collection of five wizarding fairy tales translated from ancient runes by Hermione Granger, with commentary attributed to Albus Dumbledore.

One tale, “The Tale of the Three Brothers,” is especially important to the Harry Potter plot because it introduces the three Deathly Hallows: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Invisibility Cloak. The other stories broaden Rowling’s depiction of wizarding folklore and its attitudes toward magic.

Rowling originally produced a small number of handwritten and illustrated copies for people closely connected with the books. The commercially published edition supported her children’s charity work through the Children’s High Level Group, later renamed Lumos.
