What was J.K. Rowling’s first published book under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s first published book under Robert Galbraith was The Cuckoo’s Calling.

The Cuckoo’s Calling is a crime novel featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott. It was published in 2013 and initially presented Robert Galbraith as its author. The book follows Strike’s investigation into the death of model Lula Landry, which was initially treated as suicide.

Rowling’s authorship was revealed several months after publication. The disclosure caused a major increase in attention and sales, but the later books in the Cormoran Strike series continued to be issued under the Galbraith name. The pseudonym allowed Rowling to write crime fiction separately from the expectations surrounding Harry Potter.

The title is often confused with The Silkworm, which is the second Cormoran Strike novel, or Career of Evil, the third. The Cuckoo’s Calling is the series opener and introduced both Strike and Robin to readers.
