What was distinctive about the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham compared with 2018 and 2022?
Answer
They were a standalone event
The 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham were staged as a standalone event rather than as part of the multi-sport European Championships.
European Athletics had previously included its senior outdoor championships within the multi-sport European Championships in 2018 and 2022. Birmingham 2026 returned to a separate athletics championship format.
The event was still a senior outdoor championship, with track, field, road-running and race-walking competitions. “Standalone” describes its relationship to the wider European Championships programme; it does not mean that the competition was small or independent of European Athletics.
The distinction matters because the 2018 and 2022 editions shared a broader multi-sport identity, while Birmingham was organised as its own European Athletics Championships edition.
