What was Chevrolet’s first front-wheel-drive passenger car sold in the United States?

The story behind the answer

The Chevrolet Citation was Chevrolet’s first front-wheel-drive passenger car sold in the United States.

Chevrolet introduced the Citation for the 1980 model year on General Motors’ X-body platform. Its transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout created more interior space within a relatively compact exterior, responding to changing fuel-economy expectations and competition from smaller imported cars.

The Citation was offered as a two-door hatchback, four-door hatchback, and three-door hatchback. It quickly became a major sales success, although early X-body cars later faced criticism and safety concerns connected with braking and handling behavior.

The Citation should not be confused with the later Cavalier, Celebrity, or Corsica, which were also front-wheel-drive Chevrolet cars. It also followed the rear-wheel-drive Nova, whose production ended as the Citation entered the market. The model’s launch marked a major shift in Chevrolet passenger-car engineering.
