What was Bob Marley's cause of death?
Answer
Melanoma
Answer
Melanoma
Bob Marley died from melanoma, a form of skin cancer that began in his toe and later spread through his body. He died in Miami on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36.
In 1977, Marley was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma after a dark mark appeared beneath the nail of his right big toe. This rare type of melanoma develops on areas such as the palms, soles, or nail beds, rather than on skin that is commonly exposed to sunlight. Doctors recommended amputating the toe, but Marley chose a less extensive procedure because of religious concerns and worries about his ability to perform.
The cancer later metastasized, meaning it spread from its original site to other parts of the body. Marley continued recording and touring for a time, including performances connected with the Uprising album, but his health eventually prevented him from performing. He sought treatment in several places, including Germany, before traveling toward Jamaica.
People sometimes say he died simply of “cancer.” That is broadly true, but melanoma is the more specific and accepted answer.
