What title did J.K. Rowling use for her first crime novel featuring Cormoran Strike?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling used the title The Cuckoo’s Calling for her first crime novel featuring Cormoran Strike.

The novel was published in 2013 under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. It introduces Cormoran Strike, a private detective, and Robin Ellacott, who becomes his secretary and later an important investigative partner. Their professional relationship continues through the later books in the series.

The story begins when model Lula Landry dies after falling from a London balcony. Strike investigates the death, which was initially treated as suicide, and the case leads him into the lives of the victim’s family, friends, and associates.

The author’s identity was initially presented as Robert Galbraith, but Rowling was identified as the writer soon after publication. The Cuckoo’s Calling is therefore distinct from The Silkworm, the second Strike novel, and from the television adaptation titled Strike.
