What title did J.K. Rowling receive in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling received the title Companion of Honour in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The Companion of Honour is a British and Commonwealth honour awarded for major contributions to the arts, science, medicine, or government. It is limited to a small number of living members at any one time, which makes it distinct from many larger honours systems.

Rowling was recognized for services to literature and philanthropy. The honour acknowledged both her literary achievement and her charitable work, including efforts connected with children’s welfare and multiple sclerosis support.

The title is abbreviated CH and is not the same as a knighthood or damehood. Rowling was appointed a Companion of Honour, rather than being made a Dame. She had already received other awards and honours, including an appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2001.
