What title did J.K. Rowling give her 2016 screenplay about Newt Scamander?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s 2016 screenplay about Newt Scamander was titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The title comes from a fictional Hogwarts textbook first mentioned in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In the film, Newt Scamander is the author of that textbook, and the story follows him in 1926 New York after magical creatures escape from his case.

The film was written by Rowling and directed by David Yates. Eddie Redmayne played Newt Scamander, while Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Colin Farrell were among the principal cast members. It was released in November 2016 and became the first film in a planned prequel series.

The title is sometimes confused with the later subtitle The Crimes of Grindelwald, which belongs to the second film, released in 2018. The 2016 title is also distinct from the short companion book published in 2001.
