Matthew Hudson-Smith won the men’s 400 metres at Birmingham 2026 in 44.17 seconds.
The British athlete finished clearly ahead of France’s Muhammad Abdallah Kounta, who ran 44.40, and the Netherlands’ Jonas Phijffers, who took bronze in 44.41. Hudson-Smith’s performance gave the host team another individual track title at Alexander Stadium.
The one-lap event is often called the longest sprint because athletes must sustain near-maximal speed for an entire circuit. It is run in lanes, so competitors remain separated throughout the final.
This result should not be confused with Hudson-Smith’s participation in the men’s 4 × 400 metres relay. Individual and relay performances are listed separately in championship results, even when an athlete competes in both.
