Great Britain and Northern Ireland recorded 39.97 seconds in the mixed 4 × 100 metres relay at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The performance won gold and set a European record.
The mixed relay was one of five events making its European Athletics Championships debut in Birmingham. It combines women and men in the same four-person team, making baton order and exchange strategy especially important. Teams must manage differences in speed, stride length and positioning through each exchange.
The British quartet included Amy Hunt, Dina Asher-Smith, Zharnel Hughes and Jeremiah Azu. Hunt had already won the women’s 100 metres, 200 metres and women’s 4 × 100 metres, so the relay victory gave her four gold medals at one championships.
Breaking 40 seconds was a significant milestone for the event. Great Britain and Northern Ireland became the first team to run under that barrier in the mixed 4 × 100 metres at the championships.
