Answer
Troglobite
What term describes animals adapted to permanent cave life? Troglobite describes animals strictly adapted to permanent underground or cave life.
Troglobites, also called troglobionts, are species or populations that are bound to subterranean habitats and generally cannot maintain a normal life outside them. Because caves offer constant darkness, limited food and relatively stable conditions, these animals often evolve distinctive features known as troglomorphism.
Common adaptations include reduced or absent eyes, loss of body pigment, slow metabolism and elongated antennae or other sensory appendages. These changes are not universal, but they reflect the pressures of navigating and finding food in darkness. Many troglobites are endemic to a single cave system because underground barriers prevent easy dispersal.
The term is narrower than “cave animal.” A troglophile can live both underground and on the surface, while a trogloxene enters caves only occasionally and cannot establish a permanent subterranean population. Bats are therefore commonly cave users, but they are not generally troglobites.
