What species is Tai Lung in the Kung Fu Panda films?

Tai Lung is a snow leopard in the Kung Fu Panda films.

Tai Lung is the main antagonist of the first film, where he escapes from Chorh-Gom Prison after years of confinement. He was once Master Shifu’s adopted student and was trained in kung fu with the expectation that he might become the Dragon Warrior.

His ambition turns destructive after Oogway refuses to select him. Tai Lung believes the Dragon Scroll was rightfully his, setting up his conflict with Po. The character’s design uses the large, muscular form and spotted coat associated with a snow leopard.

Tai Lung is often mistakenly described as a tiger because Tigress is another major feline character in the series. They are different animals and occupy very different roles: Tigress is one of the heroic Furious Five, while Tai Lung is Shifu’s fallen former student.
