What species is Melman in the Madagascar film series?

Melman is a giraffe in the Madagascar film series. He is one of the four Central Park Zoo animals whose journey begins when they are transported away from New York.

Melman is characterized by his very long neck, nervous temperament, and constant concern about medical symptoms. His anxious personality is a recurring source of comedy, especially because he believes he has numerous illnesses and relies heavily on medical advice.

David Schwimmer provides Melman’s voice in the main films. The character’s relationship with Gloria becomes especially important in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, where Melman’s devotion is shown through his willingness to make a dangerous sacrifice.

Melman is sometimes mistaken for a generic tall zoo animal, but the films consistently identify and depict him as a giraffe. His species also explains many visual jokes involving doorways, vehicles, and the height of the group.
