In Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Alex and his friends land in Africa.
The 2008 sequel follows the zoo animals after their adventures on Madagascar. The penguins attempt to repair an airplane, but the journey does not go as planned. Alex, Marty, Melman, Gloria, and the penguins ultimately arrive on the African mainland.
Africa is especially important to Alex because he was born there. His reunion with his parents, Zuba and Florrie, gives the sequel a family story alongside its comedy and adventure. The animals also encounter a wider community of lions and other wildlife in the African setting.
The title can cause confusion because Madagascar is itself an African country geographically, but the film distinguishes the island from the African mainland. The characters travel from Madagascar to mainland Africa, where much of the sequel takes place.
