What screenplay did J.K. Rowling write for the 2016 Wizarding World film?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The film was Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is set decades before the Harry Potter story and follows Newt Scamander, a British magizoologist whose magical creatures escape in New York City.

Although the title comes from a 2001 Hogwarts companion book, the film is not a direct adaptation of that book’s short entries. Instead, Rowling used its fictional author and subject as the foundation for an original screenplay.

David Yates directed the film, and Eddie Redmayne played Newt Scamander. The movie also introduced a wider historical storyline involving the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, which continued in later Fantastic Beasts films.
