What organization did J.K. Rowling establish in 2005 to campaign against institutional care for children?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling established the Children’s High Level Group in 2005 to campaign against institutional care for children.

Rowling created the organization with politician and former European Parliament member Emma Nicholson. Its original purpose was to improve the lives of children in institutions and promote family-based care and community support.

The group later adopted the name Lumos in 2010. Lumos takes its name from the light-producing spell in the Harry Potter books and works internationally on ending the institutionalization of children.

The organization’s former and current names are easy to confuse. Children’s High Level Group is the name connected with its founding in 2005, while Lumos is the later name under which much of its public advocacy has taken place. The charity is separate from Rowling’s personal fiction publishing career.
