What online writing platform did J.K. Rowling launch in 2012 for new wizarding-world material?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling launched Pottermore in 2012 as an online platform for new wizarding-world material.

Pottermore opened to the public in April 2012 after an earlier limited beta period. Rowling contributed original writing that expanded details about characters, history, magical institutions, and the world surrounding the Harry Potter novels. The site also offered interactive experiences connected with the books and sold digital editions and audiobooks.

The platform was created with Sony and initially included interactive book moments, house sorting, wand selection, and a social experience. In 2019, the main site was rebranded WizardingWorld.com, and Pottermore Publishing became the digital publishing name associated with the Harry Potter e-books and audiobooks.

Pottermore is sometimes used as a synonym for the broader Wizarding World brand, but they are not identical: Pottermore was the original website and platform.
