J.K. Rowling launched Pottermore in 2011 as the official digital home of the Wizarding World.
Pottermore was announced in June 2011 and opened to the public in April 2012 after an earlier registration period. The website combined interactive features with new writing by Rowling, including background information about characters, magical subjects, and the history of the Wizarding World.
Users could be sorted into a Hogwarts house, receive a wand, and explore illustrated moments based on the books. The platform also became a major digital retailer for Harry Potter e-books and audiobooks. Its launch was significant because the original novels had been published before e-books became central to book marketing.
In 2019, Pottermore’s website was replaced by WizardingWorld.com, later known as Wizarding World. The earlier name remains important in Harry Potter history, but it should not be confused with a fictional location or school. Pottermore was a real online publishing and fan-experience platform.
