What online Harry Potter project did J.K. Rowling launch in 2011?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling launched the online Harry Potter project Pottermore in 2011.

Pottermore was announced in June 2011 and opened to the public in April 2012 after an earlier limited registration period. It combined interactive features with new writing by Rowling, including background information about characters, magical subjects, and the wizarding world.

The website also offered digital editions of the Harry Potter books and allowed users to be sorted into Hogwarts houses and receive wands. Rowling wrote original material specifically for the platform, expanding details that were not fully explored in the novels.

Pottermore later changed direction and was renamed Wizarding World Digital in 2019. The broader Wizarding World brand now covers Harry Potter and related franchises. This means Pottermore and Wizarding World are connected, but they are not identical names for the same period of the project’s history.
