The number 95 appears on Lightning McQueen in Pixar’s Cars films. It is displayed on his body as part of his racing identity and is closely associated with the character.
McQueen’s number was chosen as a reference to 1995, the year Pixar released Toy Story, its first feature film. The number also fits the character’s status as a race car competing for the Piston Cup. His red paint, yellow lightning decals, and number 95 make his design immediately recognizable.
Although McQueen keeps the number throughout the series, his sponsorship and appearance change as his career develops. He begins as a rookie associated with Rust-eze and later becomes a mentor to Cruz Ramirez. The number should not be confused with Doc Hudson’s number 51 or The King’s number 43.
