The Nintendo figure line supported as a new feature in Super Smash Bros. 4 was amiibo.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, often called Super Smash Bros. 4, was among the first games to support Nintendo’s amiibo platform. Amiibo figures use near-field communication, or NFC, to transfer data between a compatible figure and a game system. In Smash, supported figures could be trained and used as special computer-controlled fighters.
Nintendo officially announced amiibo at E3 2014, and the first Smash-compatible figures arrived alongside the Wii U version in late 2014. The Wii U GamePad contains an NFC reader, allowing figures to be scanned directly on the controller.
Amiibo is sometimes grouped with Skylanders or Disney Infinity because all are toys-to-life products, but those are separate commercial lines from other companies. Funko Pop is also a collectible figure brand, not Nintendo’s interactive platform.
