J.K. Rowling presented the Harry Potter companion book about magical creatures as written by Newt Scamander.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was published in 2001 as a charity companion volume. Its fictional author, Newt Scamander, is described as a magizoologist, meaning a specialist in magical creatures. The book is formatted like a Hogwarts textbook and includes notes attributed to Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
The companion book is not a conventional narrative novel. It gives brief entries on creatures such as the Acromantula, the Basilisk, and the Niffler, while also explaining the history and classification of magical beasts. Rowling wrote it to support Comic Relief fundraising, alongside Quidditch Through the Ages.
Newt Scamander later became the central character of the Fantastic Beasts film series. That connection can cause confusion: the book’s author is a fictional character, while the 2016 film uses Newt as the protagonist in an original story.
