What name did J.K. Rowling use for her 2016 screenplay about Newt Scamander?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling used the title Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for her 2016 screenplay about Newt Scamander.

The film is set decades before the main Harry Potter story and follows Newt Scamander, a magizoologist whose magical creatures escape in New York City. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt, while the screenplay marks Rowling’s screenwriting debut.

The title was borrowed from a fictional Hogwarts textbook. In the Harry Potter novels, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is credited to Newt Scamander and appears as a schoolbook. Rowling later wrote a real companion book under the same title for charity.

The film began a prequel series planned around a larger story involving Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore. Its title should not be confused with the later film subtitles The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore.
