What is the wingspan of the Airbus A380, including its wingtip fences?

The story behind the answer

The Airbus A380 has a wingspan of 79.75 metres, including its wingtip fences.

That span makes the A380 one of the widest commercial aircraft ever built. Airbus designed the aircraft around a very large double-deck fuselage and a high-capacity wing, while keeping the span within the limits of the airport Code F category used for the type.

The measurement is sometimes reported as 79.8 metres after rounding. It is also easy to confuse the wingspan with the A380’s length, which is about 72.7 metres for the standard passenger version. The wingtip fences are included in the commonly cited wingspan figure.

The A380’s wing was developed and assembled across Airbus’s European manufacturing network before final assembly in Toulouse, France. Its size required reinforced airport infrastructure and special parking positions, but it could still use many existing long-haul airport runways.
