What is the title of the first screenplay written by J.K. Rowling for a feature film?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s first feature-film screenplay was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The 2016 film was written by Rowling and directed by David Yates. It is set in 1926, several decades before the Harry Potter story, and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander in New York City.

The title comes from a fictional Hogwarts textbook attributed to Newt Scamander. Rowling had previously published a companion book with that title in 2001 for Comic Relief, but the film is a new narrative rather than a direct adaptation of the textbook’s brief, humorous catalogue.

Fantastic Beasts became the first film in a planned prequel series. Its follow-ups were The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018 and The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2022. The title is sometimes confused with those sequels or with the earlier companion book.
