What is the title of J.K. Rowling’s first screenplay in the Wizarding World?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s first Wizarding World screenplay was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The film was released in 2016 and marked Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is set in 1926, decades before Harry Potter begins his education at Hogwarts, and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander in New York City. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt in the film.

The title comes from a fictional Hogwarts textbook credited to Newt Scamander. Rowling had previously published a charity companion book with that title in 2001, but the 2016 movie is an original prequel story rather than a direct adaptation of that short reference book.

The film launched a planned series of films and expanded the setting beyond Britain. Its screenplay was published in book form, and the movie introduced characters and historical conflicts that connect to Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald.
