What is the surname of J.K. Rowling’s crime novelist detective Cormoran?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s crime novelist detective is named Cormoran Strike.

Cormoran Strike is the central private investigator in the series Rowling writes under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. He first appears in The Cuckoo’s Calling, where he investigates the death of model Lula Landry. His temporary secretary, Robin Ellacott, becomes an important investigative partner.

Strike is a former Special Investigation Branch investigator in the Royal Military Police. He has a prosthetic leg after losing part of his leg in Afghanistan, and his military background informs his investigative methods and personal history.

Readers can confuse Strike’s surname with Galbraith, the author name used for the series, or Ellacott, Robin’s surname. Neither is the detective’s surname. The books are contemporary crime novels, separate in genre and setting from Rowling’s Harry Potter fantasy series.
