What is the ranking system called in Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005)?

The story behind the answer

The ranking system in Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) is called the Blacklist. It is a hierarchy of 15 of Rockport’s most wanted street racers, with the player beginning at the bottom and working upward through increasingly difficult rivals.

The story starts after the player loses a race and has a custom BMW M3 GTR taken by Clarence “Razor” Callahan. Razor occupies the top Blacklist position, so the campaign’s central objective is to defeat each rival and reclaim the car. Progress requires more than winning races: players complete milestones and accumulate bounty to unlock challenges against higher-ranked racers.

The Blacklist is often confused with a generic “wanted list,” because police pursuits and criminal notoriety are major parts of the game. However, Blacklist is the proper in-game name for the competitive ranking. The system also gives the campaign its clear structure, turning a large open-world racing game into a climb from the least-known challenger to Rockport’s most feared driver.
