What is the officially recognized height of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain?
Answer
8,848.86 metres
Answer
8,848.86 metres
Mount Everest’s officially recognized height is 8,848.86 metres.
Nepal and China announced this jointly measured elevation in 2020. The figure includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap, which is why it is often described as the summit elevation rather than simply the height of the underlying rock.
Earlier measurements produced slightly different results. Nepal’s 2019 survey and a Chinese survey in 2020 used modern satellite positioning and other instruments, replacing widely quoted values such as 8,848 metres and 8,850 metres.
Everest lies on the Nepal–China border in the Himalayas. Its summit is higher than K2, Kangchenjunga and every other mountain on Earth above sea level, although Mauna Kea is taller when measured from its underwater base.
