What is the name of the world's largest ice cave?
Answer
Eisriesenwelt
Answer
Eisriesenwelt
The world's largest ice cave is Eisriesenwelt, in Werfen, Austria. Its name means “World of the Ice Giants” in German, a fitting description of its vast chambers and frozen formations.
Eisriesenwelt lies inside Hochkogel mountain in the Tennengebirge section of the Austrian Alps, about 40 kilometres south of Salzburg. The cave is a natural limestone system extending for more than 42 kilometres, although visitors explore only about the first kilometre on guided tours.
Salzburg naturalist Anton von Posselt-Czorich documented the cave in 1879. It opened as a show cave in 1920 and is reached by a mountain road, cable car and steep walking route. Because cold mountain air enters through the cave entrance, melting and refreezing create its extensive ice formations.
A common mix-up is confusing the world's largest ice cave with the world's longest cave or largest cave by volume. Those records refer to different cave systems and use different measurements.
