Quidditch is the wizarding sport created by J.K. Rowling and played on broomsticks.
In the Harry Potter books, two teams of seven players compete while flying around a pitch. A match uses four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers, and one Golden Snitch. Chasers handle the Quaffle, Beaters defend their teammates and redirect Bludgers, the Keeper guards the hoops, and the Seeker pursues the Snitch.
Catching the Golden Snitch normally ends the match and awards 150 points, although the team that catches it does not automatically win. That scoring rule is a frequent source of confusion because the Snitch is much more valuable than an ordinary goal.
Rowling has said the sport’s name was inspired by the word “squash,” and she developed it as part of the fictional world’s culture. The real-world sport later adapted the concept into versions played without flying.
