The tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy in Pixar's Cars is Mater.
Mater is Lightning McQueen's first close friend in Radiator Springs. He is an old, rusty tow truck with a cheerful personality, a strong local accent, and a habit of telling exaggerated stories. Despite his comic appearance, Mater is loyal, observant, and central to Lightning's change from an arrogant racer into a more considerate friend.
Larry the Cable Guy, the stage name of comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney, supplied Mater's voice in the Cars films and related productions. Mater later became the lead character of the animated television series Mater's Tall Tales, which presents humorous stories about his supposed adventures. Mater's name is a shortened form of “tomater,” reflecting the character's rural, informal style. He is sometimes mistakenly described as a pickup truck, but his role and design identify him as a tow truck.
