The space villain imagined by Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 2’s opening sequence is Emperor Zurg.
Toy Story 2 begins with a comic, video-game-like sequence in which Buzz Lightyear battles Emperor Zurg. The sequence is not a literal event happening to the toys in Andy’s room; it is framed as an imagined or entertainment-style adventure centered on Buzz’s heroic space-ranger identity. Zurg is presented as Buzz’s recurring arch-enemy.
Zurg also appears as a toy in the main story. Andy owns a Zurg action figure, and the character becomes part of the film’s running jokes about Buzz’s supposed intergalactic mission. In the final act, Zurg encounters Buzz at Al’s Toy Barn, where their confrontation is interrupted by a humorous revelation involving Zurg’s relationship to Buzz.
Zurg is sometimes confused with villains from other Pixar films, such as Syndrome from The Incredibles. He is specifically part of the fictional space-opera world surrounding Buzz Lightyear.
