Tom Riddle grew up at Wool’s Orphanage in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
The orphanage is introduced in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince during Albus Dumbledore’s memories of visiting the young Tom Riddle. Riddle was born in London and was left at the orphanage after his mother died shortly after his birth.
Dumbledore visits him there before Riddle begins attending Hogwarts. The memories show that Riddle already displayed unusual abilities and a controlling attitude as a child. At Hogwarts he later becomes Lord Voldemort, the series’ principal antagonist.
Wool’s Orphanage is fictional, and it should not be confused with St. Brutus’s Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys, the invented institution mentioned in connection with Harry’s cousin Dudley. The orphanage is important because it establishes Riddle’s early life before his transformation into Voldemort.
