Albus Dumbledore’s magical bird in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series is named Fawkes.
Fawkes is a phoenix, a creature associated with rebirth and renewal. He belongs to Albus Dumbledore and lives in the headmaster’s office at Hogwarts. Fawkes helps Harry during the confrontation with the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets by delivering the Sorting Hat and healing Harry’s basilisk wounds with his tears.
The phoenix’s loyalty is also important in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Fawkes’ song and flight are connected with Dumbledore’s resistance to Lord Voldemort, and the bird helps demonstrate that magical creatures can influence major events rather than merely decorate the setting.
The name Fawkes alludes to Guy Fawkes, whose name is associated with the historical Gunpowder Plot in England. Fawkes is not the same kind of animal as Hedwig, Harry’s snowy owl, or Errol, the Weasley family’s owl. Those birds serve different characters and have different roles.
