Melman is the giraffe voiced by David Schwimmer in Madagascar.
Melman is one of the four animals who leave the Central Park Zoo and reach Madagascar. He is notably anxious and frequently worries about illness, medical treatment and dangerous situations. Despite his nervousness, Melman remains loyal to Alex, Marty and Gloria and becomes especially important to Gloria’s story across the trilogy.
David Schwimmer voices Melman in Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. The character’s long neck and spotted coat make him visually distinctive, but his cautious dialogue and hypochondriacal behavior are the main parts of his comic identity.
Melman is sometimes confused with Maurice or Mort because all three are supporting characters connected with the lemur storyline. Maurice is King Julien’s adviser, while Mort is the small, excitable lemur devoted to Julien. Melman is the tall giraffe who belongs to the original New York zoo group.
