What is the name of the giant bird in 'Up'?

The story behind the answer

The giant bird in 'Up' is named Kevin. Russell gives the bird this name after meeting it near Paradise Falls, although the film later reveals that Kevin is female.

Kevin is a giant, flightless bird living in the South American wilderness. Russell initially treats Kevin as a friendly companion, while Carl is more concerned with completing his journey and protecting his balloon-lifted house. The bird becomes central to the story because explorer Charles Muntz has spent years trying to capture a living specimen.

The name is a deliberate joke: Russell assumes the colorful bird is male and chooses a traditionally masculine human name, but Kevin is actually a mother calling for her chicks. Carl, Russell, and Dug eventually help reunite her with them after Muntz captures her.

Kevin is not confused with Dug, the talking golden retriever, or Charles Muntz, the film's antagonist. 'Up' was released by Pixar in 2009 and was inspired partly by the dramatic tepui landscapes of Venezuela, which provide the setting for Kevin's habitat.
