In “Aladdin,” the royal vizier who wants the magic lamp is Jafar.
Jafar serves as the grand vizier of Agrabah and is the Sultan’s trusted adviser, but he secretly seeks greater power. He learns that the lamp lies inside the Cave of Wonders and can be retrieved only by someone described as a “diamond in the rough”—Aladdin.
Jafar manipulates Aladdin into entering the cave, intending to take the lamp for himself. Once he controls the Genie, Jafar uses its magic to become Sultan and the world’s most powerful sorcerer. His ambition ultimately leads him to wish to become a genie, trapping himself inside a lamp.
A common mix-up is Iago, Jafar’s talking parrot and accomplice. The Sultan is Agrabah’s ruler, while the Genie is the lamp’s magical servant; neither is the vizier seeking the lamp.
