What is the name of the fictional wizarding sport invented by J.K. Rowling?

The story behind the answer

Quidditch is the fictional wizarding sport invented by J.K. Rowling.

It first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as a major part of Hogwarts life. Two teams of seven players compete on flying broomsticks. Chasers handle the Quaffle, Beaters use bats against Bludgers, and each team has a Seeker who pursues the Golden Snitch.

Catching the Snitch traditionally awards 150 points and usually ends the match, although the team with the higher score wins. Rowling has said the sport’s name was inspired by the fictional Hogwarts location Queerditch Marsh. In the real world, the name Quidditch was used by an adapted broomstick sport, but the International Quidditch Association changed its sport’s name to quadball in 2022.
