What is the name of the fictional village where J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter grew up?

The story behind the answer

Little Whinging is the fictional village where J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter grew up.

Harry lives at number four, Privet Drive, with his aunt Petunia, uncle Vernon, and cousin Dudley. The address is located in Little Whinging, a Surrey setting created for the books. Harry’s life there is deliberately ordinary and restrictive before he learns about the wizarding world.

Little Whinging is not the same place as Godric’s Hollow, where Harry’s parents lived and where he later visits. It is also different from Hogsmeade, the wizarding village near Hogwarts. These locations are often mixed up because each is important to Harry’s story.

The name “Little Whinging” reflects the series’ playful use of British place-name conventions. The word “whinging” is British informal language meaning complaining or whining, fitting the satirical tone of the Dursleys’ suburban world.
