J.K. Rowling places Harry Potter’s childhood home in the fictional village of Godric’s Hollow.
Godric’s Hollow is the birthplace or home of several important wizarding figures. Harry’s parents, James and Lily Potter, live there with their infant son when Lord Voldemort attacks them on 31 October 1981. The attack kills Harry’s parents and leaves Harry with the lightning-shaped scar associated with his survival.
The village is also connected to Albus Dumbledore’s family and to Godric Gryffindor, one of Hogwarts’ founders. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry and Hermione visit the village and see the Potter family memorial and the graveyard where James and Lily are buried.
Godric’s Hollow should not be confused with Little Whinging, the Surrey town where Harry lives with the Dursleys, or Hogsmeade, the wizarding village near Hogwarts. Each location has a distinct role in Rowling’s fictional geography.
