The fictional village where J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter character visits the Three Broomsticks is Hogsmeade. The village lies near Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is described as the only entirely wizarding settlement in Britain.
Hogwarts students may visit Hogsmeade during approved weekend trips, beginning in their third year. Harry, Ron and Hermione visit several shops and locations there, including the Three Broomsticks inn, Honeydukes sweet shop and Zonko’s Joke Shop.
Hogsmeade is different from Diagon Alley, the London shopping street where wizarding families buy school supplies. It is also distinct from Godric’s Hollow, a village associated with Harry’s family history, and Little Whinging, the Surrey suburb where Harry grows up with the Dursleys.
The village provides a setting outside school but still within the magical community. Its name combines “hog,” a word associated with the Hogwarts setting, with “meade,” an old term for meadow or fermented honey drink, creating a strongly traditional fantasy atmosphere.
