Harry Potter grows up in the fictional village of Little Whinging.
Little Whinging is located in Surrey in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Harry lives there with his aunt Petunia, uncle Vernon, and cousin Dudley Dursley at number four, Privet Drive, before learning that he is a wizard.
The setting emphasizes Harry’s isolation from the magical world. The Dursleys reject anything unusual, while the nearby suburban environment appears ordinary and carefully controlled. Harry’s departure from Little Whinging therefore marks the beginning of his journey into a much larger world.
Little Whinging is often confused with other important locations. Godric’s Hollow is associated with Harry’s parents and family history, Hogsmeade is a wizarding village near Hogwarts, and Ottery St Catchpole is connected with the Weasley family. None is Harry’s childhood home.
