Quidditch is the fictional sport J.K. Rowling created for witches and wizards.
The game is played on broomsticks and involves two teams of seven players. Each side has three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper, and one Seeker. Players use four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers, and a Golden Snitch. Scoring and catching the Snitch give the sport its distinctive combination of teamwork, physical danger, and pursuit.
In the novels, Harry plays Seeker for Gryffindor. The game appears throughout the series as a school competition and as part of wizarding culture outside Hogwarts. Rowling has said the idea was inspired by inventing a game for the fictional world, while the name and rules belong to the story’s magical setting.
Quidditch is often confused with other wizarding games. Gobstones is a separate game, and wizard’s chess is a magical version of chess. In the real world, “quidditch” also became the name of a non-magical sport inspired by the books, with rules adapted for physical play without flying.
