Newt Scamander is the fictional author credited with J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts companion book.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was published in 2001 as a charity companion volume to the Harry Potter novels. The book is presented as a Hogwarts textbook and includes notes attributed to Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
Newt Scamander is described as a magizoologist, a specialist in magical creatures. Rowling later developed him into the central character of the Fantastic Beasts film series, beginning with the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Eddie Redmayne played Newt in those films.
The book is different from a conventional narrative novel. It is structured as a fictional reference guide, with entries about creatures such as the Acromantula, the Bicorn, and the Niffler. Proceeds from the original charity edition supported Comic Relief.
