D’Hoffryn recruits humans who have been consumed by anger or resentment and transforms them into demons capable of granting revenge wishes. His most famous recruit is Aud, a woman from medieval Sweden who turns her unfaithful boyfriend into a troll. After noticing her talent for revenge, D’Hoffryn makes her a vengeance demon; she later becomes known as Anyanka, or Anya.

Unlike demons such as the Master or the First Evil, D’Hoffryn is not simply a general vampire or primordial force. His authority comes from his leadership of the vengeance-demon order and his ability to grant, restore, or remove demonic powers.
