What is the name of the annual AFL award for the season’s best mark?

The story behind the answer

The annual AFL award for the season’s best mark is called Mark of the Year.

The award recognises the most spectacular or impressive mark taken during the AFL season. In Australian rules football, a mark is a clean catch of the ball after it has travelled the required distance, traditionally at least 15 metres, without being touched. High marks in which a player leaps above opponents are especially associated with the award.

Mark of the Year is presented as part of the annual AFL Awards. Fans have historically participated in selecting the winner from nominated marks, making the honour both a football award and a celebration of the sport’s visual style.

It is separate from the Coleman Medal, which recognises the leading goal-kicker, and from the Brownlow Medal, which recognises the fairest and best player in the home-and-away season. The related Goal of the Year award honours a scoring play rather than a catch.
