What is the name of the African-American girl who lives next door to the Pickles?

The African-American girl who lives near the Pickles family is Susie Carmichael. In the original Rugrats, Susie is a bright, kind-hearted neighborhood friend and a frequent counterbalance to Angelica Pickles.

Susie’s family, the Carmichaels, moves in across the street from the Pickles midway through the second season. That detail explains a common wording mix-up: Susie is often described as a neighbor, but the show places the Carmichaels across the street, while the DeVilles live directly next door to the Pickles.

Susie is voiced by Cree Summer, who also voices several other animated characters. Because Susie is about Angelica’s age, she can understand and speak with adults, unlike the babies, whose conversations are usually hidden from grown-ups. This makes Susie an important bridge between the toddlers and the adult world.

She also appears in the later spin-off All Grown Up!, which shows the Rugrats characters as teenagers. Her role in the original series is especially memorable because she is confident, thoughtful, and willing to challenge Angelica’s schemes.
