J.K. Rowling’s fictional village where Harry Potter lives with the Dursleys is Little Whinging.
Little Whinging is presented as a suburban community in Surrey, England. Harry lives at number four, Privet Drive, with his aunt Petunia, uncle Vernon, and cousin Dudley. The ordinary-looking setting contrasts with the magical world that Harry discovers after receiving his Hogwarts letter.
The village is fictional, but Rowling places it within a recognizable English county. The Dursleys’ home becomes one of the series’ recurring locations, especially at the beginnings and endings of the novels. Harry’s cupboard under the stairs is also located at number four, although later adaptations depict details of the house differently.
Little Whinging is not the same place as Hogsmeade, the wizarding village near Hogwarts, or Godric’s Hollow, a village associated with Harry’s family history. Those locations belong to the magical world, while Little Whinging represents Harry’s restrictive childhood before his wizarding identity is accepted.
